The New England Division covers the area from Tenterfield in the north to Uralla in the south and west to Inverell and Bundarra. It also includes the towns of Armidale, Inverell, Glen Innes, Tenterfield, Emmaville, Ashford, Uralla, Tingha and Guyra. The New England Division covers an area of 33,442 square kilometres with an estimated population of 68'000 people.

The New England region is accessible from all major highways and by air, train and coach. The New England offers three World Heritage National Parks, historical buildings, fine museums, renowned art collections, superb fishing, fossicking, bushwalking, festivals, markets, pubs, clubs, fine restaurants and the breathtaking gold of autumn which is so much a part of the New England.

Area Health Service

Hunter New England Health was created on 1 January 2005, following the merger between Hunter, New England and the Lower Mid North Coast local government areas of Gloucester, Greater Taree City and Great Lakes. It provides care for approximately 840,000 people and covers a geographical area of over 130,000 square kilometres - the size of England! Has approx. 14,500 staff and has 1500 medical officers. It provides health services to 12 per cent of the State's population .Provides health services to 20 per cent of the State's Aboriginal population. The area spans 32 local government areas and has a head office in Newcastle and a regional office in Tamworth.

Armidale

Armidale is situated midway between Sydney and Brisbane on the New England Highway. Armidale is renowned in the region for its regional university and high quality of public and private schools as well as restaurants, theatre, music and cinema.

Armidale has many fine heritage buildings, cathedrals and schools. Attractions for the Armidale area include the national parks, gorges and waterfalls, scenic flights and helicopter trips into the gorge country, New England Regional Art Gallery, Samarez Homestead, Armidale Folk Museum and the Aboriginal Cultural Centre and Keeping Place.

Inverell

Part of the Fossicker’s Way, this thriving rural city offers much for the traveller. Copeton & Pindari Dams attract visitors for water skiing, speed boat racing, sailing and fishing. Gem mining and fossicking offer tourists and opportunity to take away more than just memories from their stay here. It has a vibrant commercial centre, health service with medical, surgical and obstetric beds.

Inverell is well supported with educational facilities, both public and private, pre-school., primary and high school. The TAFE is well supported with students who are able to remain in the town and not travel distances for trade qualifications.

Glen Innes

Glen Innes is located at the intersection of the New England and Gwydir Highways. Glen Innes is surrounded by National Parks, which include the Washpool and Gibraltar National Park, Mann River Nature Reserve, Warra National Park, Capoompeta National Park and the Torrington State Recreation Area. Other attractions around Glen Innes include the Australian Celtic festival, Australian Standing Stones, heritage buildings, the Land of the Beardies History House, fossicking and the Cooramah Aboriginal Centre.

Tenterfield

Tenterfield lies to the north of the New England Division, just south of the NSW / Queensland border. Tenterfield offers an interesting mix of natural and historic attractions. National Parks surrounding Tenterfield include Bald Rock, Boonoo Boonoo Falls National Park and the Girraween and Sundown National Parks. Museums, local tours, colonial architecture and antique shops abound.

Ashford

Ashford is a small, rural village that began as a rendezvous point for shearers and shepherds from surrounding stations. Ashford is located 56kms north of Inverell and provides activities for the entire family including fishing, inland water sports, bushwalking, Kwiambal National Park, Limestone Canves and McIntyre Falls.


Uralla

Uralla is steeped in history, from Aboriginal rock art to gold fever to the legend of the bushranger Thunderbolt. Uralla has many activities and places of interest on offer including McCrossins Mill, Hassetts Military Museum, New England Brass and Iron Lace Foundry, the majestic gorge country, fishing, bird watching at the Dangar’s Lagoon Nature Reserve, resident artists and one of the world’s most advanced satellite tracking station.
